Для героев сегодняшней новости задача «впихнуть» в один настольный компьютер сразу двадцать четыре SSD-накопителя оказалось вполне по силам. Более того, полученная в результате экспериментов система оказалось молниеносно быстрой. Менее чем за сутки народные умельцы собрали мощнейший ПК на базе двух 3,2-ГГц четырёхъядерных процессоров Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775, материнской платы Intel Skulltrail D5400XS, четырёх гигабайт оперативной памяти FB-DIMM DDR2-800, двух ускорителей ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2. Но ключевой особенностью компьютера стала дисковая подсистема, собранная из двадцати четырёх 256-Гб SSD-дисков Samsung общей ёмкостью 6 терабайт. Для организации массивов накопителей энтузиасты применили RAID-контроллеры Adaptec 5 Series и Areca 1680ix-24.
Одним из сложнейших этапов стала конфигурация SSD-дисков. После ряда проб и ошибок был найден такой оптимальный вариант – 10 накопителей подключалось к контроллеру Areca, 8 к контроллеру Adaptec, а остальные 6 напрямую к SATA-портам материнской платы. При таком подходе удалось достичь потрясающей производительности – скорость последовательного чтения/записи превышала 2 Гб/с. Но для получения такого результата пришлось отсоединить одну из видеокарт, так как компьютеру не хватало мощности для инициализации контроллера Areca. Кроме того, пришлось отсоединить все оптические приводы, чтобы освободить порты. Питание этой уникальной системы обеспечивали два киловаттных блока питания Corsair HX1000W.
Из параметров, характеризующих производительность собранного ПК, стоит отметить:
Скорость чтения с SSD при последовательном доступе: 2121,29 Мб/с (измерялось с использованием IOMeter); Скорость записи при последовательном доступе: 2000,195 Мб/с (измерялось с использованием IOMeter); Загрузку всех приложеений Microsoft Office всего за 0,5 секунды; Открытие пятидесяти трёх приложений за 18,09 секунд.
